Across 40 years, in multiple roles and locations around the world, I gained a practical understanding of self‑improvement, goal setting, continuous process improvement, and leadership.
Through experience, education, and training, I learned what actually works — and what doesn’t — when people try to change themselves or the systems they operate in.
Over time, I developed and refined a repeatable methodology for managing change at multiple levels.
I applied this hybrid approach to manage my personal and professional development, lead, coach, and mentor others, strengthen team performance, and initiate, plan, organize, direct, and sustain large‑scale organizational changes that affected hundreds of thousands of Soldiers, employees, and leaders across the Army.
After retiring from my second career, I took the time to break down the components of successful change at the personal, team, and organizational levels.
And then I distilled those lessons into the Train to Change series — published independently so the work can remain practical, honest, and free of hype.
These insights can help you manage your own change, regardless of your current situation or objectives. And they are applicable to helping you lead change in others and within organizations.
They’re grounded in real conditions, real constraints, and real results.
In sum, the methodology works — and you can learn it.
All the best, J. Reed Durand
